Competition, Built
Year : 2016
Type : Religious
Location : Gyeonggi, Gwacheon, Korea
Design Team :
Woo Hyoung Lee, Jang Won Lee, Yeong Gon Lee, Jae Yong Yu, Byeong Jun Kim, Collaboration with URBAN X Architects

The screen church was designed within the urban area surrounded by dense highrise apartment complex with very tight site condition and full of programmatic requirements. Facade by perforated brick screens is intended to not only create the architectural characteristics of Church but also control visual openness from the eyes of passersby & neighbors to accentuate programmatic exposition of church to public. Proposed brick screen functions as a sunshade by filtering light in staggered patterns to create seclusion of interior space and expand the limits of materials to make a unique church. The design of the main chapel space, located below grade is taken from the idea of the bottom of iceberg to transmit natural lighting from the building periphery at grade level to the outside surface of monolithic box floating above chapel space. The effect created during the day by the natural light is reversed at night by interior lights waffle-like shape lighting inside of floating box.
